Types of Attic Insulation
An uninsulated attic can cause uncomfortable home conditions throughout the house. Hot or cold air will escape through your ceilings, forcing your air conditioning to work overtime to regulate temperatures. This leads to skyrocketing energy bills.
There spray foam insulation many different types of insulation available for your attic and crawl space. The most popular materials include batt and blown (loose fill) insulation. We recommend getting a professional inspection before choosing the material and method of installation.
Fiberglass batt insulation is a common option for attic insulation. It is composed of fiberglass particles and comes in blankets that can be affixed to the attic’s surfaces. It provides an R-Value of about R-2 per inch of thickness, and its density helps reduce the transmission of sound from room to room. However, it does not mix well with moisture, and it can take a long time to dry once it becomes wet.
Signs Your Attic Needs New Insulation
Blown-in insulation, also known as loose-fill insulation, is an alternative to fiberglass blankets. It is composed of small, loose particles of cellulose, mineral wool or other materials, and it’s installed using a blowing machine to ensure comprehensive coverage in the attic. It provides an R-Value similar to batt insulation, and its density helps reduce the transmission of noise from room to room. It also contains fire-resistant compounds that help to prevent the spread of flames from one room to another.
Rigid foam insulation is made of panels or boards, and is primarily comprised of polystyrene, polyisocyanurate or polyurethane. It is applied in the attic to create a solid, insulating barrier and acts as both an air barrier and a structural support system. It provides a high R-Value and an excellent air barrier, but it’s more costly than other types of insulation. It can release volatile chemicals and requires the use of protective gear during installation.
